The Middle Years Programme (MYP)
SOS-HGIC has been authorized to offer Years 4 and 5 of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) since October 2020. The MYP is our entry-level curriculum, and students progress directly into the IB Diploma Programme (DP), which SOS-HGIC has offered for over 30 years.
The MYP emphasises:
- Conceptual understanding
- Learning in real-world contexts
- Disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning
- The development of transferable skills
These skills support independent learning and the application of knowledge in unfamiliar contexts through varied assessments, culminating in the Personal Project, skills essential for success in the IB Diploma Programme.
The transition from other curricula to the IB represents a significant shift in teaching and learning approaches. As a result, SOS-HGIC has relaxed its entry requirements to ensure that incoming students possess the skills necessary to engage fully and succeed in the MYP.

The IB Diploma Programme (DP)
SOS-HGIC was the first school in Ghana to offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in 1990 and has consistently achieved excellent results. We are a four-year IB Continuum School, and all MYP students are expected to progress into the DP. As a result, there are limited spaces for direct entry into the Diploma Programme.
The IB Diploma Programme provides a challenging, internationally focused, broad, and balanced education for students aged 16 to 19. It equips students with the academic skills required for university study and further education, while also fostering the values and life skills needed for a fulfilled and purposeful life.
Direct-entry DP applicants are required to:
- Successfully pass an online entrance examination in Mathematics, Science and Cognitive Ability test as well as a written test in English.
- Successfully pass an admissions interview
This assessment is designed for students aged 16 or above who have completed at least five years of full-time formal education.
Upon passing the examination and interview, applicants must submit their IGCSE or GCSE results as soon as they are released. Subject choices will be confirmed only upon receipt of these results.
